Da Bomb: East London Painted By The Arts

East London, since the 20th Century, has been a haven for artists and artistic institutions. “Pretty much every major artist in London has worked in East London at one time or another, including numerous Turner Prize winners.” [1] Bethnal Green, once home to Jack the Ripper and WWII bombings, has among neighbouring localities, become home to a number of galleries: Modern Art, Fred, Vilma Gold, 20 Projects, The Cell Project, Victoria Miro to name a few….

Bomb It Artist Update: Blek Le Rat ringing in 30 years on the street!

Xavier Prou a.k.a. Blek le Rat, the Parisian born artist practicing stencil graffiti since the late 1970’s known as the “godfather” of stencil graffiti is commemorating 30 years creating art on the streets with the launch of new retrospective with Art Publishing, Ltd.

Blek will be launching his book at the Art Basel, Miami Beach on December 2-4, 2011 and further gallery exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe.  The retrospective features the artist’s private family photos, point and shoot images of his graffiti artwork from around the world, and full-color reproductions of his gallery pieces. The book is separated into two distinct sections: “Street Art” and “Fine Art,” both of which are augmented by the writing of celebrated scholars, critics, experts in relevant fields, fellow artists, journalists, collectors and gallerists. Lavishly illustrated with more than 200 images!

His work has influenced many of the most celebrated contemporary artists including the infamously anonymous graffiti artist Banksy, who in 2006 said, “Every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat has done it as well. Only twenty years earlier. . .”

Da Bomb: Style Wars Outtakes Documentary Project Needs Your Help

The 1981 Documentary, Style Wars, is looking for donations through Kick-Starter for their latest project to retrieve the films outtake footage.

[NOTE: If You Read Through the Entire Post Theres a Surprise At the End]

With the money raised from Kickstarter the producers can rent the necessary studio space and equipment, pay for the labor to go to the archives, find the best clips, and get them ready to appear as extras on the new STYLE WARS HD & Blu Ray disc.

STYLE WARS was originally edited to its 69 minute length from about 30 hours of 16 mm film that we shot in 1981 and 1982. Hours of exciting and wonderful scenes in the extra footage that didn’t make it into the finished film need to be restored. There are many shots of trains and some surprising masterpieces rescued from oblivion.
