Legal Graffiti

There are some great fresh aerosol pieces in Brunswick along the Upfield train line. Both of these works employ a dynamic ribbon design that ties these very long works together. At Brunswick station there is very large legit works, replacing a piece from last year that had been viciously vandalized. Maybe that is why there are some very angry figures in the piece near Brunswick station.

Each year I try to do a survey of the graffiti and street art along the Upfield train line. It is of course easier to see it all on bicycle as the bike path runs along the train line and the trains on the Upfield line only run every 20 minutes at their best. Prompted by an article in The Moreland Leader (9/3/09) “Writing’s on the wall” by Brigid O’Connell this year I decided to focus my attention on the legal street art.

Graffiti at Tubs – vandalism or art?

Yesterday afternoon while driving through the University District, I saw something that made me pull over, park my car, and take about a gazillion pictures. Someone had painted dynamic and colorful graffiti over the entire exterior of the old Tubs building on the corner of 50th and Roosevelt. Out front, there is a sign: Notice of Proposed Land Use Action: the Tubs building is slated for demolition, to make way for a 60-unit mixed retail and residential building.

Police use MySpace account to find teen graffiti suspect

Police in Surprise say a MySpace.com account recently led them to a teen they suspect caused more than $30,000 in graffiti damage to a building under construction.

Police arrested the 16-year-old on Feb. 26 after they found the multistory office building, located in the 15300 block of West Bell Road, covered with graffiti. Some windows were also shattered and a water truck at the site was damaged.

A MySpace profile featuring photos of graffiti that matched the blue, brown, turquoise and hot-pink markings on the building led officers to their suspect, said Sgt. Mark Ortega, a Surprise police spokesman.
