Graffiti Artist Shepard Fairey Helps Restore Italy with SMS Venice

From Arrested Motion:

It appears Swoon wasn’t the only artist in Venice recently.  Shepard Fairey and his boys were also spotted spending a few weeks to “restore Venice.” The purpose of their visit wasn’t to vacation in the grand canals of Venice, but to create works for the SMS Venice Foundation. The works were donated by Shepard to promote the preservation of artistic and architectural heritage of the historic city of Venice.

In usual Obey fashion, Shepard and his crew went hard at work in creating the mural that was placed at the center of ”Piazza San Marco” (St. Marks Square). Unlike his previous visit to Boston, Shepard was welcomed with open arms by the Italians. Check out this video from the news in Italy.

As reported from the “Rumor Mill” Shepard is now in Switzerland to attend Art Basel where he is officially showing with Deitch Gallery.

*Interesting note — Director Jon Reiss’s wife, Jill Goldman, helped arrange Shepard’s trip and exhibition.

Press Trust of India: No graffiti, less posters: No business for artists, printers

New Delhi, Apr 19 (PTI) With Election Commission ruling out the use of graffiti and wall paintings and restricting the use of banners and posters as part of election campaign, printers and artistes across the capital are feeling the heat.

Elections are considered a golden phase for printers as various political parties get their party banners and hoardings printed in large number. But the strict guidelines by the Election Commission have hit their business, those in the trade say.

“The ban has ruined our business this time. The sample posters that we have printed have not been sold. Our workers are short of work,” says Dayal Bhai of Sindh Traders, Sadar Bazar.

The Election Commission has imposed restrictions on hoardings, banners, flags, wall writings and pasting of posters as well as any form of defacement.

“We have not totally discarded the posters or hoardings but it must add to the candidate’s expenditure which should not exceed 25 lakhs. Stern action would be taken against political parties and candidates who do not follow the guidelines issued by the Election Commission” says J K Sharma, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Delhi Election Commission.

Ban on hoardings has given a nightmare to printers, however, electronic media, newspapers and advertising agencies are getting benefit as some parties are also using internet for their campaigns.

Letter: Graffiti not art, but unsightly damage

Letter to AppealDemocrat.com on graffit… What do you think?

We are living on a graffiti planet. It’s on freeways, overpasses, buildings and billboards. It’s shaped the urban landscape from Paris to L.A. It’s intensified over the years.

The first time I noticed it I was stationed on Guam during World War II. Someone wrote “Kilroy was here” on a quonset-hut, put there by American troops. In my travels around the world I’ve seen graffiti in almost every major city, even on the pyramids. We humans seem to have a desire to deface, and put our signature on buildings, and walls; there’s a need to leave our mark.

There’s an enormity to it now; it is widespread throughout the world. It’s a way to communicate social messages. Some claim it isn’t simple vandalism, it’s an artistic expression employed around the world. I regard it as unsightly damage. It’s existed since ancient times, going back to the Roman Empire, and range from simple scratch marks to elaborate wall paintings. Gang “taggers” deface in order to communicate their social messages on property without the owners’ consent.

Now, in, some circles it’s a form of legitimate art. Last year in L.A. alone, 7,622,234 square feet of graffiti was removed from along freeways at a cost of $2.7 million.
