Graffiti artist-turned-cause-celebre Shepard Fairey was placed on probation yesterday after pleading guilty to destruction of property charges for pasting posters to signs and electrical boxes in the city.

Fairey, famed for his iconic “Hope” portrait of President Obama, was sentenced to two years probation, ordered to pay a $2,000 fine, and agreed not to possess tools of the tagging trade while in Suffolk County.

Cops intercepted Fairey in February as he walked into the city’s Institute of Contemporary Art while en route to his opening night gala, where he also planned to act as DJ.

Graffiti issue still before council

MICHIGAN CITY – A city ordinance pertaining to graffiti is still under consideration by the Michigan City Common Council. The ordinance was introduced by Angie Nelson, an at-large council member, and Willie Milsap, 5th Ward council member, at the April 7 council meeting.

Nelson wants the public to know that the council will have a second and possibly a third reading at the May 5 council meeting. At the meeting, members of the audience will have a chance to make comments. However, a formal public hearing on the graffiti ordinance will not be held.

Nelson said graffiti removal kits are not yet available, but would be available if the council adopts the ordinance.

Street Art Exhibit, Installation & Book Signing

From Mid-City Arts Gallery:

Rapidly becoming one of the United States’ top graffiti destinations, Miami, Florida is home to a deep well of talented artists driven by a fiercely competitive graffiti scene.  Miami’s profile has risen thanks to the city’s role as host to the famed “Art Basel” and most recently “Primary Flight.” “Primary Flight” is the internationally acclaimed, site-specific, street level mural installation that takes place during Art Basel. Graffiti opponent completes huge count of Melbourne graffiti

Transcript:

TONY EASTLEY: It’s a big job but Melbourne man Scott Hilditch decided someone had to do it.

He’s just completed a count of all the graffiti in central Melbourne.

Mr Hilditch heads the group Graffiti Hurts Australia and he says the city is wrong to allow graffiti in certain laneways, even though it may be a tourist attraction.

Brendan Trembath reports.

BRENDAN TREMBATH: In Melbourne graffiti is allowed in certain laneways, such as Hosier Lane.

The back street has become a tourist attraction.

JEREMY HOENIG: I’ve seen some cool artwork throughout the United States touring around, but this is a new one. It’s a very eclectic mix.

BRENDAN TREMBATH: Jeremy Hoenig is from San Francisco.

He came across the laneway by chance then returned with his camera.

The graffiti in Melbourne’s laneways is done by a variety of people.

Vexta, as she wants to be known, does stencils.
