Planet Progress Show
As Berlin is always coming up with fresh shows that push the boundaries of what street art is the Planet Progress show is having its finale party in Berlin. If you are in Berlin be sure to check it out.

Here’s the details we got from a friend at the show:
Hello everybody,
if you are in Berlin and if you have time – feel invited to visit the big FINAL of the street art exhibition PLANET PROZESS ( https://urbangrassroots.net/ ). The concept of an permanently changing Exhibition comes to the end and will be celebrated with a big street-party.
The process of the changing of our piece of art the PUPLIC INNERSPACE (an installation in form of an appartment) is documented and will be presented in front of it. ”
Wann / When: Samstag den 11.08.2007 ab 14.00 Uhr
Wo / Where: Cuvrystr. 2-3, Berlin Kreuzberg
Eintritt frei / Free entry

Here’s a statement from the show:
The “ordinary” urbanite acts rather reserved in public space. He is
considerate of his fellow men to not bother them. He doesn`t throw trash on the street either he cleans it away. Visually he stays on the sideline, too. Except a few things on one’s own property or jobs, he leaves the arrangement of his
surrounding area to others. Instead he likes to ask questions like: “Are you
doing this at home, too?”.
We, street artists and graffiti writers, act contrary. Unquestioned and
arbitrary we feel free to redefine the visual image of “our” cities with paintings
and installations.
A central idea of the street art exhibition PLANET PROZESS is the
communication between “active” and “passive” townspeople. This thought
provides the basis of our work of art. We are stunned about the difference
between the normal inhabitant`s slack motivation compared to our own
strong motive force to actively participate in the urban space. We do believe
that 90% of all people design, redesign, clean and repair their own
apartments and houses. Thats why we offer this installation in form of an
apartment as an open public area, as a playground for the visitor`s
(re)configuration and design. The place is decent furnished, less decorated
and not occupied. We give this to the general public and invite all to use it,
to look after it,to change it, to throw socks in the nooks and to hang up a
picture, to cook and to celebrate in, but above all – to vitalize it !
From the 20.07.2007 to the 11.08.2007 we will stay totally in the
background, we are not going to intervene the event in any manner.
“Puplic inner space” is a work by PEGASUS, PONY-G, EHSO, ROGER and
RICHARD SCHWARZ.

In Love with LA
So apparently the LA Weekly has fallen in love with graffiti… Since the RISE OF THE SEVENTH LETTER hit its cover on July 11th, the LA Weekly has begun it’s very own blog on graffiti and street art in the city called LURKER.
In addition to some maps of Seventh Letter pieces around LA, you’ll see some nice pics of art found in local hot spots and around town.
Enjoy it here: https://blogs.laweekly.com/lurker/

Also get your hands on a copy of the new book, “GRAFFITI LA: Street Styles and Art” by Steve Grody. Already being called a bible of Los Angeles graffiti, its chalked full of oral histories and color photos, including Saber’s legendary LA River piece.
GRAFFITI L.A.: Street Styles and Art | By STEVE GRODY | Foreword by JAMES PRIGOFF | Abrams | 304 pages | $35 hardcover | More than 900 color photos, one full-color map.
Read the Nylon review of it here.

LA flashback
In the recent LA Weekly’s story about the Seventh Letter Crew there’s a link to their 1989 cover story on graffiti. Together the two articles give a full circle picture of the state of LA graff.
GOING UP IN L.A. by Ruben Martinez discusses the history of graffiti in Los Angeles, delineating the Eastside and Westside divide, growing up with gangstas, and the city’s attempts to eradicate it back in the day. Considering a generation in graffiti can be as short as 5 years, this article is already old school. In general it’s a good local history lesson, so give it a read.

7th Letter Crew in LA Weekly
One of Los Angeles’ greatest crews- The Seventh Letter- was recently featured on the cover of our weekly newspaper- the LA Weekly.
If you live in Los Angeles or have seen BOMB IT then you’ll be familiar with the fresh work of masters Retna and Revok featured. The story “THE RISE OF THE SEVENTH LETTER” also includes more dope pictures of the crew’s work and interviews with Eklips, (founder of AWR, MSK, and Seventh Letter), Revok, Retna, Saber, Rime, Zes, and Push.
Discussing the state of graffiti in Los Angeles today and city officials and law enforcement’s efforts to combat it RETNA explains,

“There’s nowhere for kids coming up to get good. New ideas haven’t been allowed to flourish since the ’80s. We love our city, and it’s wrong to think that graffiti is out to destroy something. It’s just the opposite. Maybe it would result in better pieces if you don’t have to worry about getting shot at or sent to jail. But [in reality] a big part of the story is the ‘performance’ and the effort it takes to get your paint together and sneak out of the house, climbing stuff. The effort of what it took to get the art there, just for the recognition. It will happen with or without the city’s help. We’ve already been to jail and paid the fines.”

“I want to do art that you can’t avoid — not that you have to seek out, …I’m about painting walls and being out in the city, interacting with people on a daily basis”- REVOK
