BARRY McGee show at RedCat

Barry McGee is having a solo show at the RedCat gallery in downtown LA.

For McGee, graffiti is a vital communicative record of society, an extension of the desire for freedom and the intellectual core of his practice. It is pure expression in line with the values of American society. As he has explained: “The American Dream has nothing to do with criminality, but with a desire for independence and adventure, so escaping from any kind of control or definition also signifies not being identified, acting illegally, standing outside of every category of art and intervention on the streets.

LA River City Visionz at CreWest Gallery

RIVER CITY VISIONZ
A month long exhibit and series of events inspired by the L.A. River.

Opening Reception, Sept 15th
6pm – 10pm, CreWest Gallery

Although the L.A. River is mostly known as a bleak concrete environment, these local artists seek to express it’s hidden beauty and alter the perceptions, function, and significance of its paved riverbanks through their artwork. This exhibit features original paintings, photography, and mixed media works by locals who have found inspiration in the L.A. River and it’s unique landscape.

This exhibit and series of events kicks-off a year-long endeavor
to create a huge River City Visionz mural involving hundreds
of local and international artists scheduled to be painted in the
Los Angeles River in the early fall of 2008.
Artists include: Chris Haston, Eriberto Oriol, Edgar Hoill, Ruet, Spurn, Man One, Eyeone & Others.

Thursday, September 13th: Preview Opening – First glimpse of the exhibit can be viewed during the monthly Downtown Artwalk from noon – 9pm. For more info: Downtown Artwalk

Saturday, September 15th: Opening Reception – Opening and Artists Reception from 6-10pm. Live DJ and light refreshments.
