Graffiti Archeology in NYC

Check out these articles from the New York Times and Newsday about a developer who discovered a treasure trove of graffiti at 151 Wooster in Manhattan when he started demolishing his property for luxury condos. The developers are very excited about their find. They had the Guggenheim Museum out for a public talk. Artists on the wall supposedly include Fab 5 Freddy, Futura and Jean Michel Basquiat. The developers are trying to recreate that feel of the 70/80s NY Loft and they feel that the graffiti validates their mission – unfortunately the lofts they are building will be sold in the $3.5 – 9.75 million. It remains to be seen if any of the new residents will be inviting graffiti writers to come in and paint their new digs. Thanks to Harrison Bohrman for the tip off!

“Festival de Ideas” LA ESCOSESA

Our friends in Barcelona are facing radical changes to their public spaces. When we filmed there in 2005 things were already starting to change. Barcelona had long been tolerant of graffiti artists doing murals in public and the authorities lack of anti-graffiti enforcement made beautiful artwork possible all over the city. Since artists weren’t afraid of getting arrested they could take their time to create masterpieces.

Today artists’ arrests are on the rise and Barcelona is losing its artistic flavor. Popular painting spots are under attack as the city gentrifies and speculators focus on profit instead of designing a city which suits the needs of the public.

But Barcelona is known for its resistance too and artists are taking a stand.

From December 1st-14th, 2007 you can join the 1st “Festival of Ideas” La Escosesa, in Barcelona.

Please read the message from artist Extra below to hear more about what is happening and check out the sites below to see how you can get involved and celebrate Barcelona’s rich history and culture.
